Plastering For Any Space
HJK Plastering offers plastering services in the Northern Rivers across walls and ceilings, covering everything from patching damage through to full plasterboard lining. That includes skimming to smooth out existing surfaces, resheeting where sections are beyond repair, and setting up new areas so they’re ready for paint.
We work on repairs in existing homes, renovations and new builds, stepping in at different stages depending on what the space needs. Some jobs only need a skim to tidy up imperfections, others need sections replaced to get a solid base again. Knowing when to repair and when to start fresh is a big part of getting the result right.

Getting Surfaces Ready For Paint
A good plaster finish comes down to how the surface behaves once it dries. Fresh plaster can take anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks to fully cure, and it needs to dry out evenly before painting starts. If it’s rushed, moisture gets trapped, that’s when issues show up later.
We focus on getting surfaces level, joins clean and repairs blended so everything dries consistently and looks right once painted. Whether it’s a skim over existing walls or new plasterboard, the goal is the same: a smooth, even surface that doesn’t need fixing after the fact.

Everything You Need To Know
How long does it take for new plaster to dry before I can paint?
While plaster may look dry after a few days, it generally takes around 7 to 14 days to fully cure, depending on the thickness of the application, room temperature, and ventilation. It is crucial to wait until the plaster has turned a consistent, pale pink colour (with no dark brown patches) before painting. Painting too early can trap moisture, leading to peeling, bubbling, or mould. We recommend applying a "mist coat" (watered-down emulsion) first to seal the plaster before your final paint coats.
What is the difference between plastering and skimming?
Plastering is a broad term for applying a thick, foundational layer (10-15mm) of plaster to cover bare brick, block, or lath walls to create a new surface. Skimming is a specific type of plastering—a thinner layer (2-3mm)—applied over existing plaster or plasterboard to smooth out imperfections, hairline cracks, or uneven textures, providing a perfect finish for redecorating.
How should I prepare my room for plastering?
To ensure the best finish and protect your property, please remove as much furniture as possible from the room. We will handle floor protection, but clearing the area allows us to move freely and work efficiently. If we are repairing old walls, please remove any wallpaper, pictures, or fixtures from the walls. Ensuring the area is well-ventilated—by leaving windows accessible—helps significantly with the drying process.
